Ohana Health Plan, a key provider of government-sponsored managed care services in Hawai‘i, in collaboration with the Centene Foundation—the charitable division of Centene Corporation —has launched a state-of-the-art mobile health clinic alongside Hawai‘i Island Community Health Center (HICHC). HICHC is a nonprofit healthcare provider committed to promoting lifelong wellness through high-quality, community-focused care.
This year, HICHC awarded a $550,000 grant to ‘Ohana Health Plan and the Centene Foundation to support the “Gateway to Health” campaign. This funding aims to increase access to vital healthcare services for students in underserved communities. The services offered through the initiative include well-child checkups, immunizations, mental health support, and ongoing care for chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and ADHD.
To mark the launch of the clinic, local and state leaders gathered for a traditional Hawaiian blessing and dedication ceremony conducted by Kahu Kamuela Chun. Attendees were also given a chance to tour the new mobile clinic, which is scheduled to begin visiting public schools across Hawai‘i Island with the start of the 2025–2026 academic year on August 4.
There will be phases to the Gateway to Health program’s implementation. First to benefit will be the HIDOE complex region of Honoka’a-Kealakehe-Kohala-Konawaena, followed by Ka’u-Kea’au-Pahoa and Hilo-Waiakea. By May 2026, the objective is to provide services to every school that has been identified, guaranteeing widespread access prior to the conclusion of the academic year.
The importance of this endeavor was underlined by Cecilia Sakata, director of school-based health at HICHC, who pointed out that the mobile clinic is ideally situated at a short distance from the classroom and can provide everything from behavioral health support to physical examinations. Scott Sivik, president and CEO of Ohana Health Plan, called the initiative a crucial resource for families and students, underscoring its role in helping children across Hawai’i Island gain better access to essential care that supports their growth and development.
