HCA Healthcare Strengthens Partnership with Tennessee State University

One of the top healthcare organisations in the country, HCA Healthcare, Inc., has announced that it will donate $1.5 million to Tennessee State University (TSU) to fund scholarships for students enrolled in the Dr. Levi Watkins, Jr. Institute and the Department of Computer Science in the College of Engineering. This donation is a part of the organization’s bigger pledge to provide $10 million over three years to Hispanic Serving Institutions and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) (HSIs). HCA Healthcare disclosed roughly $5.25 million in donations for various partnerships since making the pledge in 2021.

“We are proud of the long-standing relationship we have fostered with TSU”, “By strengthening our partnership, we will be able to create additional opportunities for TSU students and further our commitment to advancing diversity in healthcare.”

Sam Hazen, chief executive officer for HCA Healthcare

Scholarships for students enrolled in the university’s Dr. Levi Watkins, Jr. Institute Accelerated Medical Pathway programme will be supported by funds from this contribution. Within the College of Engineering, three two-year scholarships for rising juniors and three two-year scholarships for graduate students will also be given out. HCA Healthcare Scholars and HCA Healthcare ITG Scholars will get career counselling, mentorship, leadership training, seminars, and shadowing opportunities through these scholarship programmes. Additionally, HCA Healthcare will provide Tennessee State University students with specialised internship opportunities through the ITG Pathways, Technical Resident, and Part-Time Internship programmes each year.

“It is an honor to partner with TSU to support more students pursuing careers in healthcare and, in turn, helping to build a diverse talent pipeline of healthcare professionals”, “Increasing the diversity of our healthcare workforce is vital to providing equitable, culturally competent care to our communities.”

Sherri Neal, chief diversity officer of HCA Healthcare

Tennessee State University and HCA Healthcare have previously collaborated. HCA Healthcare donated $1 million to TSU in 2015 to promote the expansion of the Health Information Management programme and pay for internship opportunities. Marty Paslick, the company’s chief information officer, is a member of the College of Engineering’s advisory board, where seven of his HCA Healthcare coworkers currently have adjunct professor positions.

“We applaud and thank HCA Healthcare for this generous gift and continued support of TSU, and our talented students”, “This investment in our students helps them to become the future doctors and health technology leaders they aspire to be. HCA Healthcare is making their dreams a reality.”

Glenda Glover, president of Tennessee State University

HCA Healthcare is dedicated to working in collaboration with groups to create a broad pool of potential healthcare leaders. These collaborations include a $750,000 grant to The University of Texas at El Paso for the development of many graduate-degree possibilities for individuals interested in working in the healthcare industry. Additionally, the corporation gave Florida International University’s (FIU) Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences (NWCNHS) $1.5 million so that it could hire more staff, provide scholarships to attract more students, and alleviate the nursing shortage in the country. The School of Allied Health Sciences at Florida A&M University (FAMU) will receive a $1.5 million contribution from HCA Healthcare in 2021 to support students’ transitions from undergraduate to graduate study and management professions in the healthcare sector. The HCA Healthcare Scholars at Fisk University programme was established in 2019 to give high-achieving undergraduates access to scholarships, career planning assistance, and internship opportunities. HCA Healthcare continues to work to improve the diversity of the organization is talent pipeline through relationships with organisations located in the business and academic communities as well as other organisations.
